Program Information

Five goals drive the district's redesigned ELD program:

  1. 15% of English learners will be reclassified at the end of each year.
  2. 50% of tested English learners reported in the EL subgroup will perform at the “Basic” level or above on the California Standards Test in English/language arts.
  3. All English learners will receive English language instruction based on the components of a linguistic approach, supported by the adopted principles and methodologies.
  4. Staff will provide parents and guardians of English learners with frequent and concise information regarding student progress.
  5. Administration will provide staff development to increase teacher expertise leading to effective instruction of English learners.

As with any new approach, it is expected that progress will require work, reflection, and adjustments.  By working toward the five identified goals, other positive outcomes will be achieved, including:

  • Teachers who are experts at teaching English from a foreign language perspective;
  • An enhanced district-wide capacity to meet the needs of English learners;
  • English learners whose mastery of English is more rapid than previously thought possible;
  • A coherent program design that features clear principles and goals, new knolwedge about language acquisition, and district-endoresed methods and approaches that have been collaboratively developed.
